The Halfway Tree
(Parts 1 & 2)

Like any ten-year-old, Cherise Martin wants everyone to see how responsible and grown up she is. Despite her family's hardships, she is happy and as content as any child can be. One day, during torrential rainfall, her parents have an argument and her father leaves to meet his friends to blow off some steam but doesn't return. His absence comes not only as an emotional blow, but also as a financial one to them as well. Her close-knit family begins to implode, as the emotional and financial strain weighs heavily on them.

While all of this is going on, Cherise finds herself, and the other children in her town, haunted and ‘hunted’ by douens, a dead spirit of a child that leads children to their doom, that up until now Cherise only believed existed in stories. As her small town reels from their children disappearing from schools, playgrounds and even homes, Cherise finds out that she has a strange protection from these jumbies. Worried that her younger sister could be taken as her family circle becomes even smaller, with the help of someone unexpected, she embarks on a journey to find where the jumbies live and dwell, in the hopes that she can save her family and the missing children.

What she finds instead is a deep grudge against her family that has been brewing for over 20 years and the father she thought she had lost. Set in Trinidad and Tobago in the mid-2000s, this standalone urban fantasy novel by debut author, True Nicks, is a heartbreaking tale of family and loss, encapsulated by a world of terrifying folklore.

Sentidos: My Young Adult Years in Prose

I've always been a writer of poetry. Not avidly but to express certain things that happened throughout my life, certain moments that inspired me. Now that I'm officially past my young adult years, I find myself with a string of poems from my time spent on this earth, a snapshot of the thoughts I've had on the things I've felt over time. I never thought I would publish a poetry book because it feels even more personal to me than writing stories. It's like letting someone inside your head, but I've decided to share it with you anyway with a little backstory, where I can remember, of the headspace I was in when I wrote them. This is the closest thing I will get to a memoir. So, thread carefully, for you thread on my delicate sentidos.

About True Nicks

Hi! I’m True Nicks and I describe myself as a creative coddiwomple. After trying many things in life, which I all loved and wished I had ten more lives to accomplish all the things, I’ve returned to my first love; daydreaming. All the stories that got lost or locked away during my youth are making their debut, re-written (because God they needed it!) and now funky-fresh for the new century. If only I can pick a lane long enough to finish them.

I physically live in my home country of Trinidad and Tobago, although my mind is often somewhere else. I am fully single because I have more family and distractions in my life than my brain can sometimes handle. I feed neighbourhood cats but have none of my own. If you liked my books, please leave a review on the site you bought it on or on social media. My social media links are below.

You will not regret reading this beautifully written story.
